Running in the rain

I woke up very early to do my 16-mile long run before logging in for work today (lucky me, I get to work from home a day or two a week). It's amazing, what wonders a good night's sleep can do...I actually looked forward to the run! I had been operating in a sleep-deprived state for the past 2 weeks and didn't realize it till crankiness started creeping in.

I was planning to do the long run on Saturday with the group from the running club, but it will be my first group run, and apparently no one is as slow as me (arrgghhh!), so I have decided to keep it shorter and see how it goes.

It had rained all night and the ground was wet. It was still raining slightly when I started the run, so I wore my padded rain jacket, but shed it after a mile when I got really hot...the temperature was in the high '50's. When it's not freezing, I enjoy running in the rain. There were puddles on the road; I stayed off the grass and splish-splashed along, slipping frequently on the carpet of wet leaves on the ground.

I was faster than usual. At my regular LR speed (about 10:30 - 11 minutes per mile), my heart rate is around 110-130, so I figured I could step it up a notch without risking injury. I completed comfortably, but my knees felt more worn out than usual. At one point, a cop was standing by the side of the road, radar gun in hand, and as I passed, he aimed it in my direction and called out, '5 miles an hour'. I was running at a 9:45 pace and wanted to yell out to him, "You need to buy a new radar gun!"

After the run, I had a turkey sandwich and a glass of milk while soaking in a tub of ice. That felt so good!

Wish I could run like you. My knees would start hurting after 2 miles. Do you soak your whole body in the tub of ice?

Richard, it's nice to hear from you! I just dump enough ice in a tub of water to bring the temperature down to about 40-50 degrees, then soak in it waist down for 15-20 minutes.

Pearl, thank you for visitng my blog and for commenting! I'm so glad you are enjoying your runs. We should plan to do a race together.

There seem to be too many cops in my neighborhood...and not enough work to go around. Enjoy your run on Sunday!
