Marathon training begins

Life's back to normal, post-vacation. It's usually anti-climactic to return to work after a vacation, but I am looking forward to training for my first marathon. I haven't picked a marathon yet, I would like to put in a few high-mileage weeks and see how my body handles the beating.

I plan to follow a customized version of Hal Higdon's Novice 2 plan, with a few additional miles thrown in as a confidence booster. I would like to give it my best shot. Since my last long run was 14 miles, I am starting with a 11 mile long run this week, followed by a 15-mile long run next week. It will be a 16-week training program; in fact, 12-14 weeks should be sufficient, but I am allowing a few weeks for rest and recovery from injury.
