50 Marathons 50 Days 50 states

Dean Karnazes is touted as the 'Quintessential Ultramarathoner', is ranked by a TIME magazine poll as one of the 'Top 100 most influential people in the world', and is the man who Men's Fitness says, 'might be just the fittest man on earth'.

I am reading about the North Face Endurance 50 (50/50- Secrets I learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days - and how you too can achieve Super Endurance), his journey across the country, running 50 marathons in 50 different states on 50 consecutive days. If the running alone were not enough to kill or maim you, the travel, interviews, publicity, dealing with the media and supporters and responding to hundreds of fan email on a daily basis is bound to destroy you! But 'Karno' just sailed through it all, inspiring countless people along the way, incurring no serious damage to his body or psyche. Talk about freaks of nature!

Karno belives that people's obsession about running marathons is 'a largely unconscious backlash against comfort culture and the easy life'. While running can never be descibed as 'fun', it gives you such a feeling of well-being, that you are willing to put your body through it inspite of the pain.

I don't know that I have gained the secrets of super endurance from Karno's book (and if I have, I will never put them to the test!); but I am sure many others will attempt to repeat or better his feat.

Great post. Running (the decidedly NON-ultra endurance variety for me) sure gives me a wonderful feeling of well being.
